Somatic Breathwork Safety

Contraindications

This information is provided for general educational purposes and does not replace individualized medical advice from your healthcare provider.

Somatic breathwork is an active, guided breathing practice that uses intentional breathing patterns, music, and body awareness to support self-exploration and connection with the body.

Because this style of breathwork can create strong physical and emotional responses, it is important to review the following information before participating. Everyone who books a Maple Mindset breathwork session is also required to complete a health screening and informed consent form before their session.

What You May Experience

During or following somatic breathwork, you may notice changes in physical sensations, emotions, thoughts, memories, imagery, movement, or energy. Some people experience an emotional response, while others have a quieter or more reflective experience.

There is no specific response you need to have and no guarantee of a particular result.

The practice is always voluntary. At any point, you may slow your breathing, return to your natural breathing pattern, change position, pause, or stop the practice completely.

When Somatic Breathwork May Not Be Appropriate

This style of somatic breathwork is not recommended for individuals who are:

  • Pregnant

  • Living with cardiovascular conditions, including angina, a history of heart attack, or uncontrolled high blood pressure

  • Living with glaucoma or retinal detachment

  • Living with osteoporosis

  • Living with a history of seizures, epilepsy, or stroke

  • Recovering from recent surgery

  • Experiencing an acute infectious illness

  • Living with certain significant psychiatric conditions that may make an activating breathwork practice inappropriate

If you have asthma, please speak with your physician or healthcare provider before participating and have your prescribed inhaler available during your session.

Medical and Mental Health Considerations

Please disclose any relevant medical conditions, physical injuries, medications, mental health concerns, or psychological conditions before participating.

If you are unsure whether somatic breathwork is appropriate for you, I encourage you to speak with your physician or other qualified healthcare provider before booking.

Depending on your individual circumstances, we may decide that the practice needs to be modified or that another form of support would be more appropriate.

Breathwork Is Not Medical or Crisis Care

Somatic breathwork is offered as a personal growth and wellness experience. It is not a substitute for medical care, psychotherapy, psychiatric treatment, emergency care, or crisis services.

Participating in a Maple Mindset breathwork session does not establish a psychotherapy relationship unless you are separately receiving psychotherapy services through Maple Mindset.

Your Choice Throughout the Experience

  • You remain in control of your participation at all times.

  • You are encouraged to listen to your body and communicate with me if something feels uncomfortable or if you need additional support.

  • You may modify your breathing, take a break, return to your normal breathing pattern, or end the practice at any time.

There is no expectation that you push through discomfort or reach a particular emotional or physical outcome.

Before Your Session

Before participating, you will be asked to complete Maple Mindset's Somatic Breathwork consent and health screening process. By completing the consent form, you confirm that you have reviewed the relevant contraindications, disclosed information that may affect your participation, had the opportunity to ask questions, and are choosing to participate voluntarily.
